BRCA 1/10 Electric Circuit Clubman Series - Round 3 WLRC

10th Electric Circuit

Despite dire weather forecasts leading up the event, the Wet West London track was bone dry on the Sunday morning as the drivers arrived and setup....

IMG 4043
After the practice sessions and drivers briefing had passed the qualifying began.
The track would start off around 20degC and reach a peak of around 46degC in the early afternoon, this would make tyre prep very important as overheating tyres would cause the handling of the cars to deteriorate and lap times to increase. During the finals there was a shower of rain and some very black could which fortunatly just kept away.

There were a number of youg drivers at the meeting and of the new ones was Ethan Southall attending his 2nd clubmans event. Ethan is almost 9 years old and has been racing his VBC for about 18 months. He normally races at HRCC and is enjoying his first outdoor season. Ethan was one of 4 under 13 drivers in the F final.

F1

Cool temperatures made for fast track in round 1, though the steadily increasing temps as the day went on seemed to affect the F1 cars less than the other classes. The top 3 in round 1 were Damian Giddins, Luke Lee followed by James Wright. Damian and Luke would continue this order throughout qualifying, with the exception of round 3 where an ever improving Spencer Jones would take the second spot.

13.5 Boosted

13.5 would prove to be a slightly more mixed up affair.
Round 1's order would be Liam Brooks in first, Ashely Wiffen second and Dale Burr in third.
Round 2 Ashley Wiffen, Tony Broad Liam Brooks.
Round 3 Damian Giddins, Ashley Wiffen and Tony Broad
Round 4 Liam Brooks, Alex Gardiner and Tony Broad
Many of the changes in rounds were due to certain drivers choosing to use their second set of new tyres in different rounds of qualifying. When watching the 13.5 heats it was pretty obvious as to who had used new tyres each time as their cars looked that much sharper and with better traction.

Finals

F1
Both of the F1 A finals would see Damian Giddins spend the first few laps trying to defend from a determined Luke Lee, followed by a small gap emerging between the two which would slowly increase until the end of the race. The first final would see Andrew Walter finish third, in the second final Michael Lee would finish in third.

17.5 Blinky

The first A Final would see Spencer, Malc and Dominic put new tyres on to try and maximise their results. With Malc able to get passed Dominic early in the race, he would eventually catch up to Mark Buoniauto, unable to find a way past for most of the race he would get his chance a few laps from the end when Mark made a mistake on the infamous 'D', allowing Malc to take second spot, from early on Spencer had managed to pull out a lead which he would not relinquish for the rest of the final.
The second final would be a similar story for Spencer out in front. With Dominic and Mark pushing hard for second place, their battle would would allow Malc to get through a very tight gap and into the front of both of them. Late in the race Mark would have an incident with Malc which was deemed a racing incident. It allowed both to carry on without any change in their positions. This meant the top four would finish in the same positions in both finals.

13.5 A Final
The first B & A final were rain affected, though it had actually stopped raining during the B final the track still looked to have a slight sheen to it, and a few of the A drivers had taken the gamble of running wet tyres on their dry cars. Whilst it had paid off for Tim Langdell in the B final this wouldn't be the case in the A. Unfortunately, as the drivers readied themselves on the drivers stand it became apparent to all that running 'wets' was a mistake, the residual heat in the asphalt from before the light rain mean't the track was almost completely dry by the time the start buzzer sounded. At the first corner Damian's wet tyre shod car drifted sideways unfortunately taking out third placed Tony Broad. As the wet tyred cars slid down the order this gave anyone on slicks almost free reign to move up the finish order with Ben Cane moving up from ninth to second!
The second final would not involve the lottery of wet tyre usage, which guaranteed some close racing. Several drivers traded places (and paint) in the first few laps before things would settle down. After a few laps Liam Brooks would have a sideways moment allowing Ashley Wiffen through to first. Half way through the race Ashley would make an unforced error at the 'D' which would drop him to fourth. Eventually Liam Brooks would go on to take first place in the second final as well.
