Scottish 10th Off Road Regionals RD1 Race Report

RC News

Double wins for Pole at round 1.

This is a new series for Scotland which is being run by the clubs, for the clubs. It is the BRCA Scottish Regionals where F Grades are decided and The Scottish Junior, Senior and Veteran Champions in 2WD and 4WD classes will be decided.

The regional championship takes place over 5 rounds and with the Dumfries, Glasgow, Falkirk, Stonehaven and Dunfermline clubs all holding a round. The first round was hosted by the Dumfries club on the 3rd of July at their venue with a grass track.

The track is probably now the only grass track left in Scotland, with the other clubs recently having converted to Astroturf tracks, but the club had prepared it well and it was ready for a great day’s racing.

It was drizzling a bit during practice, but not enough to make it too unpleasant. It was very slippy at first, but soon dried up as the rain stopped and the sun came out! (It is Sunny Dumfries after all).

Racing was soon underway with 8 heats of 2WD and 4WD. Basically, we were all given a driving lesson by young Daniel Pole. He has incredible pace, but both David McLean and David Scott were able to keep him more than honest throughout the day. David Scott actually had the fastest lap of the day - a 20.45! He was pretty much on pace with Daniel but Daniel's consistency was the decisive factor.

After 4 rounds of qualifying we had Daniel on pole in both classes with David McLean 2nd in 2wd and 3rd in 4wd. David Scott would line up 3rd in 2wd and 2nd in 4WD . We had a good mix of equipment in the main finals with Associated, Schumacher, Kyosho, X-Ray, Serpent and Sworkz all represented in the top finals.

The Finals ran through smoothly with Daniel taking the win in both A Finals. In 2wd the two Davids would battle it out for the remaining podium positions with David Scott coming home in second ahead of David McLean. In 4wd David Scott would again take 2nd place and there would be a visit to the podium for Euan McLeod making up two places from 5th on the grid.

Interestingly, for a grass track, it got faster and faster as the day progressed with some of the fastest qualifying times coming in the last round.

Personally I was impressed by the overall level of driving standards and marshalling standards. Everybody had a great day, and a nice, chilled atmosphere prevailed all day. It would be great to see more novices entering these meetings - it is open to absolutely everybody and for novices, this is the best way to learn how to improve. You would be surrounded by loads of experienced drivers, most of whom are only too happy to help with technical issues or driving tips!

Big thanks to Duncan Pole especially for the mighty effort getting the day through smoothly and to Stevie for the timing equipment, to the Dumfries boys for an awesome track and venue and to everybody who did their bit to make the first ever SORS meeting a good'n!

The series continues in Glasgow on the 24th of July.
