WRCA Round 3 Race Report

Only 2 weeks after the last round, the third round of the WRCA regional series came to Caldicot RC Racers, who created a track on the grass outside their usual venue.

Despite all the concerns about rain again, a favourite topic in Wales, the day started fine and dry!

Another good entry saw 8 heats and several juniors entering (including some under 12s) who we hope will encourage more youngsters to start racing in the region.

The racing got underway on a slightly damp track which soon dried out, as it was a deceptively sunny and windy day. Craig Harris was soon setting the pace with his Xray in 4wd and Rob West with his Schumacher in 2wd.

Throughout the day the grip levels varied as the grass gave way to the dirt, meaning it was a challenge for people to improve their times. However, the round by round qualifying format meant that the orders didn’t change much overall.

The first final of the day was the C final 2wd, won by Graham Thomas from Ian Sutcliffe. Hopefully they didn’t find it too frustrating making their way past those less experienced than themselves and they were both very sporting and supportive of the youngsters.

B final 2wd was up next and Dave Jackson, who’d just missed out on the A this time, disappeared off into the distance with his PR S2V3, leaving Mike Baldwin to hang onto his qualifying position and finish 2nd with his Centro. Owen Richards maintained 3rd just ahead of Dave CLutterbuck, who was running a standard Tamiya DT03 (showing up some far more expensive machinery!).

Onto the A final and Rob West’s Schumacher converted his pole position into 1st place, ahead of Chris Mills’ Associated. After dropping back to 6th at the start, Ben Young fought his way back up to 3rd with his Team C.

The 4wd D final, consisted of several of the juniors, including 3 under 12’s. A promising sign for the future? Will Owen won the final from Michael Belsten in 2nd and James Harris in 3rd.

The next final (C), by contrast found more of our veteran drivers with pole sitter Glyn Jessop having a good battle with Jonathan Smith, following an unlucky start, leading to Glyn first, Jonathan second and Simon Notley sneaking 3rd at the line from Gary Preston. Only 0.6 of a second separating Simon and Gary after 5 minutes.

The B final 4wd  resulted in Paul Knight’s Carisma 4XS wining from pole position, however Dave Clutterbuck kept with him for most of the race and finished 2nd ahead of James Maggs in 3rd.

The final race of the day saw Craig Harris’ Xray on pole for the 3rd round in a row, which he duly converted into his 3rd win. Rob West finished 2nd with his Schumacher, 12 seconds clear of his teammate Spencer Farley, who had nipped past Chris Mills’ Associated at the start demoting him down to 4th. The rest of the final was very eventful allowing the front 4 to pull away from the remaining racers.

After 3 rounds the top 5 in 2wd are:

Chris Mills Associated B6

Martin Pitman Associated B6D

Martyn Spooner Schumacher Cougar KD

Dave Jackson PR Racing S2V3 MM

Matt Jessop Tamiya TRF201 Worlds

And the top 5 in 4wd are:

Craig Harris XRAY XB4 ‘17

Spencer Farley Schumacher CAT K2

Chris Mills Associated B64D

Martyn Spooner Schumacher CAT K2

Martyn Hadley Schumacher CAT K2

There’s a number of drivers who have only two scores so far, so this is sure to change, even before we start to drop scores!

In the meantime we have a 6 week break before the next round back down in (hopefully) sunny Saundersfoot. Huge thank you to all the helpers for building the track, running the meeting, putting it all away again and to Ceri for providing the teas and coffees.
