BOOTS TAKES ROUND 1, BRCA 1/8th Rally Cross National 2016

8th Rally X

So this past weekend the season kicked off with round 1 of the BRCA Rallycross series held at Deerdale Off Road. The astro turf surface and unsettled weather was sure to mix things up as the nations best drivers would battle it out over two days looking for a solid start to the campaign.

deerdale track

With rain overnight it would be a damp start to practice with most drivers opting for Schumacher Spirals or Hobao Angle spikes in round 1 but by the end of the session and for round 2 of practice the track would be dry enough for the most common astro tyre, the Schumacher Mini pin. Drivers and mechanics had spent hours 'trimming' their tyres to obtain the optimum grip levels, something most wont have to do for the rest of the season as the more familiar dirt rounds now follow! So after practice this is how the overall results would look with Local racer Graham Alsop taking top spot from Neil Cragg 2nd and Lee Martin 3rd.

So onto qualifying and things were tight at the top with Neil Cragg, Darren Bloomfield and Elliott Boots all sharing a TQ in the first 3 rounds. Bloomfield then found an extra gear to take top honors in rounds 4 and 5 though to give him the overall TQ. Here are the top 20 after qualifying:

So with qualifying over it was time to move onto the finals. With the top 4 drivers 'bumping up' it was all to play for across the field. There were some ups and downs, some good luck and some rotten luck all day long from the first finals to the very last! Here are the top 4 from each final.

So onto the Semi finals. With the top 7 from each side going to the A Main it was all to play for. In the B Semi Elliott Boots would take the win from Neil Cragg who manged to get his car over the line despite a breakage resulting in a 1 minute 21 second lap! Dave Bailey would come home 3rd ahead of Tony Truman in 4th, Simon Reeves 5th, Mike Lewis 6th and Ashlee Owen taking the final bump up spot in 7th.

In the A Semi it would be Darren Bloomfield who would take the win from Lee Martin in 2nd. Graham Alsop would come home 3rd with Jonathan Skidmore taking 4th. Just 8 seconds separated 5th through to 10th with the remaining bump up spots going to Jack Embling (5th), Jamie Clancy (6th) and James Le Pavoux who took 7th place by less than a second from John Holmes and Carl Jackson who narrowly missed a place in the A Main.

So after the 2 semi finals Darren Bloomfield would line up on pole for the 45 minute A Main with Elliott Boots 2nd and Lee Martin 3rd. Neil Cragg would line up 6th on the grid after limping home in the Semis.

As the flag dropped Darren, Neil and Lee would get a great start with Elliott in 4th. Neil was showing his earlier pace by banging in some seriously fast and consistent laps when disaster struck on lap 25 forcing a retirement. The top 3 would exchange places several times right up until the last couple of laps leaving Elliott Boots to take the win by just 2.5 seconds from Lee Martin with Darren Bloomfield completing the podium in 3rd place just 8 seconds behind Lee.

So with round 1 in the books we move our attention to round 2 to be held at Kent next month but before that we must congratulate Deerdale Off Road Club for hosting the season opener. A special mention goes to Chris Jeffery who worked so hard all weekend for his club. The first to arrive and the last to leave, working the flag in every heat and final and collecting litter at the end. Well Done to you Sir!
