Scottish GT12 Regionals Round 3

1/12th Circuit GT

The third round of the BRCA Scottish GT12 regionals 2018 took place on Sunday 18th of March and was hosted by Dundee and Angus Radio Controlled Car Klub. This was the second visit in the series to the Dundee club and the fantastic facility that they race at. As per round 1 a flowing track layout invited the 24 racers in attendance to show what their cars could do.

With one win each so far in the series to Andrew Edwards and John Simpson both were looking to capitalise in qualifying and secure track position for the finals. Kenneth Rogers typically goes well at this track and was looking to try and secure his first round win with local driver Graeme Dick also a challenge to the championship leaders.

Qualifying was incredibly close at the front between John and Andrew. The lead pair proving to be a step ahead of the chasing field. Andrew securing pole position in round four from John by the slimmest of margins, 0.14 of a second. Kenneth in third, Graeme in fourth and James Eaves and Steve McInally completing the A final.

Finals were run over three legs with two to count. In leg 1 Andrew took a tone to tone win with John glued to his bumper for the full six minutes finishing half a second behind at the line. The rest of the field would finish in qualifying order. Leg two would see a clean start from all the drivers with the whole final snaking around the track for a number of laps before Andrew began to stretch his lead. Andrew looked to be in commanding form until a mistake at four minutes dropped him back towards John and another closely after allowed John through. John capitilsed on this and brought his car home for the win. Kenneth followed in third with James fighting hard with Graeme to secure fourth and Steve sixth. With one win each the final leg would decide the meeting and be crucial for the championship. The two lead cars got off to a clean start but Graeme collected Kenneth dropping them to the back of the field. In a show of good driving etiquette that the series has looked to promote Graeme waited and allowed Kenneth to rejoin the race first. Andrew and John were nose to tail until an attempted pass at 2 minutes resulted in a body tuck for Andrew. John again sportingly waited but this allowed Kenneth who had made his way back up to third to take the lead. Very quickly Andrew and John were on the back of Kenneth who was holding his line well and looking like he might secure his first A final win in the series. However it was not to be when two laps from home he touched a track marker slowing his car and allowing Andrew through for the win with John in second. Graeme, James and Steve had a close race again and finished in that order.

The B final was poled by Matthew Archer from Ben Jackson and Dave Bruce. Matthew made the A final in the previous round and showed his pace by taking a clean sweep of all three rounds. Ben finished second with Dave completing the podium in third.

B Final

The C Final would see local driver Zo Kapasi take the win from Dan Lockhart and Stuart Villis.

The D final saw a win for Josh Whitelaw from Colin Imrie and Eddie Burnett.

D Final

With a win at this round Andrew has one hand on the series trophy. However it is still possible for John to win or to lose his second place to Kenneth. With racing so close the fourth and final leg of the championship is sure to be thrilling.

A big thank you goes to the Dundee club who hosted a fantastic event that was thoroughly enjoyed by all that took part. The series now moves to Lothian Radio Control Car club on the 14th of April.
