World Champion wins 1:8th Stock Cars National Round 5

The 2016 National Series ended in the Midlands, with 21 drivers competing at Notts & Derby – including all of the top 6 still capable of winning the silver roof.

A damp start to the morning and a short shower before midday resulted in very greasy conditions for the first two rounds before the track dried after the lunch break. The new World Champion Ben Harding mastered the tricky surface and was top qualifier, enjoying some feisty racing with Scott Grocock who qualified second. The first semi-final could have been confused for a destruction derby, with the average lap score 12 less than the second semi and 5 of the 6 cars all leaving the track at least once. Callum Farren pressed home his advantage starting from blue, maintaining his lead throughout the race to win ahead of Alex Montague. Semi-final two was a much tamer race with only 3 laps separating 1st and 6th, however it was brothers Mark and Andrew that clinched a Whittaker 1-2. In the final, Ben Harding avoided early crashes to take the lead and cruised to a comfortable win. Andrew Whittaker and Scott Grocock battled hard with each other and Callum Farren to finish 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. The out-going silver roof Mark Whittaker had difficulty negotiating a marshal shaped chicane and came 5th, meanwhile Alex Montague retired early in 6th after sacrificing his car as a stunt ramp and littering the pits bend with parts of his carb.

By confirming a top 3 place in the final, Ben Harding finishes top of the National Series table and adds silver to the gold and English titles he won earlier in the year, congratulations Ben!
